Sumio Moriwaki is a partner of the firm. Mr. Moriwaki’s practice focuses on general corporate, litigation and arbitration, competition law, and international transactions.

Mr. Moriwaki has represented clients in a number of complex lawsuits. He has represented: a leading Japanese construction company in a complex damages action against a major securities firm arising from fraudulent securities transactions; a leading American aircraft manufacturer in a large damages action arising from the worst airplane crash in the aviation history in Japan; and former executives of a liquidated major Japanese food company in a damages action filed by its major shareholder. Mr. Moriwaki has also assisted a major Japanese food company in responding to antitrust investigations by the authorities in the U.S. and the EU; and has represented individual employees of a Japanese automotive parts company in responding to antitrust investigations by the authorities in the U.S.

He regularly advises corporate clients, both Japanese and foreign, in various industries, including construction and civil engineering, hotel management, pharmaceuticals, medical equipment and other manufacturing.

Mr. Moriwaki has taught at the Legal Training and Research Institute of the Supreme Court as an instructor in civil practice; and at the Tokyo University Law School as a visiting professor of civil practice. He has also served as an examiner in civil law at the National Bar Examination Commission. Mr. Moriwaki has published a number of articles and participated in symposiums in the areas of civil practice, civil procedure law, protection of trade secrets in lawsuits, and civil law reform. He is currently a member of the Defense Personnel Review Board of the Ministry of Defense.

Mr. Moriwaki was admitted to the Bar of Japan in 1981. He joined Ishii Law Office in 1981 and became a partner in 1991. He received an LL.M. degree from Harvard Law School in 1985 and an LL.B. degree from The University of Tokyo in 1979. He worked at Arnold & Porter in Washington, D.C. from 1985 to 1986. Mr. Moriwaki is a member of the Daini Tokyo Bar Association and the Japan Federation of Bar Associations. He speaks Japanese and English.
